Use this checklist to help you celebrate Earth Day everyday.
- Walk together. Walk to school, a friend's house, the store, or the library instead of driving there. Start a neighborhood walking club with friends and their parents.
- Play outside. Play outdoor games when the weather is nice instead of playing video games that use electricity.
- Wear a sweater. Ask a parent to turn down the heat a few degrees. Put on a sweater to stay warm.
- Print it twice. Don't throw away paper you've printed off from the computer. Turn it over and put it back in the printer's paper tray. Now you can print on the other side.
- Reuse it. When you have friends over or if you're having a party, try to use cups and plates that can be washed and reused. If you do use paper cups, for instance, have your friends write their name on them so they can use just one cup instead of many.
- Unplug it. Unplug appliances, such as a toaster or radio, when you're not using them. They use power even when they're not running.
- Take it with you. Don't throw away that piece of fruit or those extra crackers from your lunch even if you're full. Save them for an afternoon snack or your lunch tomorrow.
- Turn it off. Turn off your computer monitor when you're not using it.
- Read a book. Read a story about interesting and exciting characters rather than watching a television show about them.
- Let the sunshine in. Before turning on a light, open blinds and drapes to let in sunlight from the windows. Use natural light instead of electricity as much as possible.
- Hang it out to dry. With a parent's help tie a string to two tree branches to make a clothesline. Hang clothes or bedding out to dry rather than using an electric dryer.
- Grow it from seed. Use an old egg carton to grow seedlings of tomatoes, beans, or other foods. Fill the carton with soil and plant a seed in each compartment. Place the carton near a sunny window and remember to water the seeds. When the seeds have grown into seedlings, transfer them to your garden outside.
- Fold it up. Fold up a reusable lightweight bag and take it with you to the store, library, school, or wherever you might need a bag. This way you won't have to use a plastic bag to carry your things.
- Collect it in a barrel. Collect rainwater in specially made rain barrels to water your plants and garden. Contact your local community officials to find out where your family can purchase these barrels.
